These California Republicans put tribe over country by backing Jordan Los Angeles Times

Jordan Downs apartment buildings were originally used to house workers during World War II and were converted to public housing. Like other housing projects, generations of families have lived at Jordan Downs. Located between 101st and 102nd Street to the north and south as well as Grape Street and Lou Dillon Street on the respective west and east side. It will consist of 84 units, with an early childhood education space for 40 young children  and a large park, called the Children’s Park. Phase S5 is  planned to start construction in the fourth quarter of 2022. But LA housing chief Doug Guthrie acknowledges there are no plans to do something on the same scale as Jordan Downs for LA’s other large public housing projects.

Democrats put up a big vote — 174 — in favor of this bill, which was intended to sweeten the overall package for conservatives. The plan, laid out in a rule that passed on Friday, was concocted to capitalize on the pools of support for each part of the $95 billion package, while preventing opposition to any one piece from taking down all of them. Trump would most likely have attended a closed-door candidate forum that Republicans plan to hold Tuesday evening ahead of a speakership vote that could happen as soon as Wednesday, according to one of the people familiar with the matter. Current Development Status

While there is no requirement that a person be elected to the House to serve as speaker, every one of the 55 speakers the House has elected has been a member of the chamber. From time to time, lawmakers have thrown their votes to those outside of Congress, often as a protest against the candidates running. While he is dominating his GOP presidential rivals, Trump is also still traveling to early primary states to campaign and has been spending much of his time focused on the four criminal indictments and several civil cases he is facing. The Republican conference is filled with members generally supportive of Trump, but whether they’d back him to serve as speaker remained to be seen. The role is a demanding position — effectively running the Capitol and dealing with hundreds of lawmakers — and requires an attention to the arcane details of legislating that Trump showed little interest in even when he was president.

Developers say they want to create an urban village atmosphere in the new Jordan Downs housing units. Unlike the old buildings, the new apartments come with central heat and air conditioning and washer and dryer units. Now in slow stages, the City of Los Angeles and two nonprofit developers are tearing down the old Jordan Downs, destroying row after row of decaying, barracks-style housing units dating back to the 1940s. Bars are over every single window of the apartments and big “No Trespassing Signs” are on every building. Let Rick Chilton, a third-generation Jordan Downs resident tell you, as he watched workers build new apartments in the middle of this sprawling public housing complex one recent morning. Bull & Bear LLC is also the owner of the 26,300-square-foot home the retired Chicago Bulls icon built in 2013 at 172 Bears Club Drive, a private golf-course community on Donald Ross Road east of Alternate A1A.

The opposition to the Israel aid represented a minority of Democrats, but reflected the deep resistance to unconditional aid and the divisions in the party on Gaza. Representative Jamie Raskin of Maryland represented a notable new “no” vote among Democrats, and other standouts included Representatives Donald S. Beyer Jr. of Virginia, Earl Blumenauer of Oregon and John Garamendi of California. The complex is bounded by Grape Street to the west, 97th Street to the north, Alameda Street to the east, and 103rd Street to the south. This large area had been used as a truck farm for years and during the second World War it supplied vegetables for the surrounding communities of Watts, South Gate and Lynwood. Located south of Century Blvd at Grape Street, consists of 81 new construction units of affordable housing.

Things To Do Newsletter

After more than 20 years of planning and construction, one of LA’s biggest public housing projects is in the midst of a $1 billion redevelopment makeover, the largest such project in the city’s history. When completed, the community will have 1,569 new affordable and market rate housing units. The development also involves building all new roads and infrastructure, including the new Century Boulevard, which opened in 2018.

In their place, the new Jordan Downs features townhouse-style apartment buildings painted in warm earth tones, with small patios on the first floor and balconies on the floors above. Although affordable housing is HACLA’s primary mission, there is more to community revitalization than simply providing housing. It’s one reason that the Jordan Downs project also included retail, parks, and commercial space.

Still, 37 “no” votes, while a break from Washington’s ironclad support for the Jewish state, fell short of the opposition bloc progressives had hoped to muster. Thirty-nine Democrats had voted “no” on Friday on the rule to allow the foreign aid package to come to the House floor, a target that progressives just missed on Saturday on the Israel bill. Fourteen of those Democrats voted on Saturday in favor of aid to Israel, while 12 Democrats who voted to allow the package on the floor on Friday then cast votes against the funding itself. While all Democrats voted in favor of aid to Ukraine and all but Ms. Tlaib supported funding to Taiwan, 37 left-leaning Democrats defected to vote against the Israel aid bill. They said before the vote that they opposed unfettered aid to Israel that could be used in its offensive in Gaza.

Residents complained they had little say in planning what would come next. Housing activists argued public housing redevelopment was a euphemism for pushing poor people out of neighborhoods to make way for gentrification. For all their problems, public housing at least kept a roof over people's heads. Mostly Black and Latino, public housing residents can be fiercely loyal to where they live. They’ve also built bonds of community and friendship over the decades, in such places as Imperial Courts and Nickerson Gardens in Watts and Pueblo del Rio in South Central.

McCarthy ultimately moved to keep the government open for 45 days without the cuts demanded by hard-right conservatives. Rep. Matt Gaetz, a Florida Republican and longtime Trump ally, cited that decision as reason to move to depose the speaker.

But public housing redevelopment soon became as much of a political powder keg as the explosives that took down famously blighted projects like Cabrini-Green Homes in Chicago. On reclaimed industrial land right next to the housing project, there’s a new 115,000 square foot shopping center called Freedom Plaza. Jordan Downs resident Shankita Perkins was one of the first people to move into new housing as part of redevelopment of the public housing complex. The Jordan Downs affordable housing project is the centerpiece of several community-serving revitalization projects emerging in Watts. The remaining phases of the of Jordan Downs Redevelopment consists of the remaining rental and homeownership phases, as well as  the Central Park and the community center.

Still, Trump continued to stoke speculation, telling Fox News Digital Thursday that he would accept a short-term role as speaker — for anywhere from 30 to 90 days — if another candidate doesn’t have the votes to win. Trump, the current GOP presidential front-runner, has used the leadership vacuum on the Hill to further demonstrate his control over the Republican Party. House Republicans are deeply fractured and some have been asking him to lead them — a seemingly fanciful suggestion that he also promoted after inflaming the divisions that forced out McCarthy as speaker. — Former President Donald Trump is officially backing Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio, the pugnacious House Judiciary Committee chairman and longtime Trump defender, to succeed Kevin McCarthy as House speaker. They were key players in both the Watts truce that preceded the 1992 Los Angeles riots and the more general truce agreed to in the wake of the riots. As a result, Jordan Downs was comparatively peaceful for the balance of the 1990s. The resurgence of gang violence in the new century, combined with steep cutbacks in police patrols, has led to a steady increase in gang violence but has decreased rapidly in the late 2000s due to numerous police raids. In the early 1990s, Jordan Downs witnessed the same social changes that marked the city as a whole. The changing demographics of Watts were reflected in tenancy at the project, as Latin American tenants began to make inroads into the long-sizeable black majority at the facility. This transformation, though generally peaceful, was accompanied by occasional tension.

Five of the phases are currently in the pre-development stages and the remaining will be developed in the next five years. The redevelopment of the Jordan Downs housing project in Watts will more than double its size and is expected to show what decent public housing could be. And in 1998, Congress even passed a law capping the number of new public housing units that could be built in cities. In a 1982 PBS documentary, one elderly Chicago public housing resident described the fear outsiders had of the projects.
